Kelly Hortense

Kelly Hortense van Loon is an illustrator, teacher, and as a child had the ambition to become a pirate. She juggles the sense with the nonsense and does not shy away from some mischief. The latter can be seen in her work; glowing slogans or illustrations that make you chuckle. Painting with ink, screen printing, or risograph printing are among her favorite techniques. In her typical nonchalant and bold style, she hijacks the norm and celebrates banality!

""I illustrate wildly in an absurd, humorous, bold, and impulsive style. A combination of styles and techniques, and sometimes literally swearing by them, characterizes my way of working and its outcomes. I have a soft spot for screen printing, or how that technique can translate colors and the poetry of the process. I find it so beautiful. Also, Indian ink, paint, and Posca pens are frequently chosen materials that are indispensable in my vicinity. As both an illustrator and a teacher, I like to explore the edge. I try to deviate as much as possible from the 'beautiful' and predictable, and leave room to find one's own language within an inspiring and nourishing framework with a lot of attention for experiment. I try not to impose too many rules on myself and others, thereby encouraging a pleasant kind of anarchism.
